Greetings from the Gartner Symposium in Barcelona. Bimodal IT is found on the agenda several times. A different approach is needed for different speeds, and a commonly used metaphor is that of samurai and ninja. I couldn’t help thinking that Enfo’s samurai can be ninja when need be!
For one of our customers, an unpleasant risk became reality two weeks ago: their own data center was suddenly blacked out because a transformer exploded. The power failed, bearing walls shifted, windows were broken, and dangerous gas was released into the atmosphere. The building was evacuated, and nothing could be done to rectify the situation. Business on different continents was in danger of stalling. Fast decision-making, skilled professionals and the right attitude were needed – in other words, ninja-like actions were asked of a team that normally operates in a samurai mode.
The servers were still down the next day, and our client made the bold decision to transfer the servers to our premises. We were all aware of the risks. Enfo’s samurai changed into ninja gear and transferred the servers to our data center in Kuopio on the same day. The task took more than 24 hours to complete, but we succeeded. The Senior VP in our customer’s Quality and Risk Management says, “A big thank you to the team, which worked around the clock. They certainly have the right attitude.”
