Together with Enfo and IBM in the first quarter of 2016, Outokumpu has carried out a so-called “Proof of Concept,” i.e. a trial run, to put IBM’s Predictive Maintenance and Quality (PMQ) to the test. The Proof of Concept was realized with Outokumpu’s employees at the company’s Walking Beam Furnace facility.
Mikael Larsson, Outokumpu’s warehouse manager, explains that his colleagues at the Walking Beam Furnace facility and throughout the company have seen evidence of the enormous possibilities that predictive analysis can offer for both production and maintenance.
“We have now seen a demonstration of a model around a problem with our furnace, which we have been working to solve for the past ten years. The model also shows how we can improve other facets of our operation with similarly predictive models and algorithms. We are fully convinced that this will provide us with a higher OEE figure and simultaneously help us lower costs.”
Mikael further explains that the insight Outokumpu has received through their tight collaboration with Enfo has been equally inspiring for the future. He says that the partnership has helped them to truly understand and appreciate data for the asset that it is, as described clearly in Industry 4.0. Mikael underscores how incredibly relevant it is to have a thorough plan to guarantee that saved data has the right quality and information. Outokumpu has repeatedly seen that predictive analysis provides strong decision support for even the most fundamental activities, from writing work orders for the right equipment to stocking items in the right way.
Enfo is looking forward to continuing the strong partnership with Outokumpu, and to take them even further into the Digital Dimension to become a company on the cutting edge of digitalization.
“I can state with real joy that the All the Way to Value concept has once again created exactly the added value that we strive to deliver.”
