Enfo to digitalise the Waltti travel card’s clearing and payment system

Digitalisation enables new ways of operating. TVV lippu- ja maksujärjestelmä Oy – an IT services and procurement company jointly owned by municipalities and the state – selected Enfo to develop, automate and maintain the clearing related to the ticketing and payment system of the entire Waltti area.

"Our goal is to automate the financial transactions of all towns and ELY centres using the Waltti ticketing and payment system, and to provide transparent and accurate data to all parties on the traffic and money flows realised. We are creating a completely new system in Finland to save the costs and time of various players," says Osmo Wilska, Senior Vice President of Enfo's Financial Process Services, who is responsible for outsourcing services in financial administration.

The Waltti travel card can be used in different towns and ELY centre areas. This makes it necessary to have a clearing system that serves all the different parties, for instance in the invoicing and settlement of ticket revenues generated by travel transactions.

"The building of the clearing services has started smoothly and in a constructive spirit. We aim to roll out the service production with an agile operating model during the summer and to increase the services’ automation level gradually later on in the autumn," says Ilkka Kankkunen, Managing Director of TVV lippu- ja maksujärjestelmä Oy.

The Waltti ticketing and payment system is already used in public transport organised by Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Kajaani, Kouvola, Kuopio, Lahti, Lappeenranta, Mikkeli and Oulu, and the ELY centres of Central Finland, North Ostrobothnia and North Savo.

The use of Waltti will expand, and the system will reach nationwide coverage by the end of 2018. There are about 160,000 Waltti travel cards in use at present, and the number of journeys made annually using Waltti will be about 200 million.

"The numbers of travel cards and journeys made using them show that the volume of data we will process, analyse and manage is huge. The Waltti area will expand further during 2016 and 2017, which means that the data volume will keep growing. Enfo has high-level IT competences, and we are more than willing to accept this challenge," says Wilska.
