Enfo giving strong support to Lassila & Tikanoja’s agile development

The objective of L&T’s network services development is to create high-quality services to customers and to focus on customer experience and high-quality services also in digital channels. The development of digital services has been focused in the Kettu development team whose objective is continuous service development throughout the services’ life cycle, uniform customer experience conforming to the brand, and continuous learning in service development.

Digital services are developed by a range of actors. L&T is involved by means of a development team representative, the business operations by the products owner, in addition to external service providers and application developers. Network services are nowadays built by L&T into cloud services with easily scalable capacity, and often the choice is Amazon Web Services (AWS).

L&T identified at a very early stage that the development involves many actors and that there was a risk of diversifying operations too much. They did not want to diversify AWS accounts into several accounts and in non-optimal configuration. Cost management between the different accounts and diversification of cloud architecture were seen as risks if a separate AWS account had to be acquired for each service. L&T decided to trust Enfo to handle the AWS in order to focus on its own core expertise of producing value to its end customers.

The development team can concentrate on creating services of optimal quality instead of managing AWS accounts and taking care of operational activities. The costs were made transparent and costs can be calculated individually for each service and product. The team is easy to manage and everyone can concentrate on doing what they are best at.

Enfo’s introduction into the development team and as AWS partner meant to L&T that the internal development team is in control of decision-making and development. The whole system is still managed by L&T, with Enfo sparring, and acting as an operational and consultative partner in a multi-supplier ecosystem.

Application developers can work autonomously, but the AWS accounts are managed by Enfo. Enfo’s experts are also sparring and providing consultation services to application developers and, if necessary, Enfo can lend a hand to the developers. Feedback from all team members has been extremely positive. Cooperation is good.

New way to communicate

Heikki considers the new communication model very positive and one of the key components of the operating model. The application developers, Enfo’s cloud management team and L&T’s development team all use Slack, in which the development work takes place. Slack in an instant messaging application designed for communication both within and between organizations. You can have a conversation in Slack between individuals and channels designed for groups.

Heikki says that the old-fashioned ticketing and weekly meeting practices would not be agile enough for their purposes, and he praises Enfo for their flexibility.

Heikki’s tips to successful and agile service development:

  1. New ways to communicate An open and fast-paced communication culture. When different worlds meet, their own way of communicating must be tailor-made to suit the whole team. The traditional IT world with its ticketing systems and the quick world of software developers meet.
  2. Bold and open. Targets, visions and expectations must be brought openly to the attention of the whole team.
  3. Trust self-control. Once the goals are known and the tools and ecosystem are in place, teams will solve the problems and challenges in the ecosystem without the need for external control.
